How To Raise And Care For Australorp Chicken

Raising your own chickens provides many benefits for you and your family. Not only does it act as an educational experience, but it also provides you with hours of enjoyment and an abundance of eggs. Despite its benefits, you shouldn’t rush into raising chickens. Instead, take your time, research the different breeds, and then decide which type of chicken would work best for you and your lifestyle.

Raising Australorp chickens requires a secure coop for protection, a spacious area for foraging, a balanced diet rich in protein, and regular health monitoring to guard against diseases. These birds are docile, excellent layers, and adapt well to various climates.

Raising Australorps is akin to maintaining a well-oiled machine; they’re robust and efficient but need regular attention to keep running smoothly. A key to their care is ensuring they have enough space. These birds are active foragers and enjoy exploring. A balanced diet that includes grains, greens, and protein will support their egg-laying prowess and maintain their sleek, black plumage. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times, especially during hot weather, to keep them hydrated and healthy.

However, it’s essential to be mindful of their social nature. Australorps, being particularly friendly and peaceful, can sometimes be bullied by more aggressive breeds if kept together. Therefore, monitoring their interactions in a mixed flock is crucial to ensure a harmonious coop. Additionally, their dense feathers make them susceptible to overheating in extreme temperatures, so providing shade and ventilation is critical. Like a treasured garden, they flourish under watchful eyes, offering back beauty and bounty in return. With proper care, your Australorps will thrive, laying generously and adding a touch of elegance to your backyard.

How Big Does Australorp Chicken Grow?

The average height of a rooster is about 27 inches, although this will vary depending on the breed and can even vary from one chicken to the next.

The Australorp rooster can reach heights of about 26 to 27 inches inches tall, while the hen is a bit shorter at 22 to 25 inches tall. This is the average height of this chicken breed at maturity and may vary depending on several factors.

Despite its large size, the Australorp chicken is a good option for beginners. This is thanks to their friendly attitude and low care requirements.

What Is The Average Weight Of An Australorp Chicken?

Australorp chickens are considered a medium or large breed, which does typically mean they need more room and will eat more food than smaller breeds.

Australorp hens weigh between 5 and 6 1/2 pounds. Australorp roosters, of course, weigh a bit more and can top the scales at up to 8 pounds. This breed also has a bantam variety, which is much smaller. The Australorp bantam hen weighs a little over 2 pounds, while the rooster weighs almost 3 pounds.

When Will An Australorp Chicken Start Laying Eggs?

One thing to consider when deciding which breed of chicken to raise is when the hens will begin laying eggs. After all, this may affect whether or not you start caring for that breed.

Australorp chickens typically begin laying eggs at between 22 and 24 weeks old. However, the exact time frame can vary depending on the overall health and wellness of the hen. It is not uncommon for unhealthy hens to have a delayed start to when they begin laying eggs.

If you are raising Australorp hens and they have not started laying eggs at 24 weeks of age, there may be an underlying issue at play. Stress, for example, can have a direct impact on when hens start laying and can even interfere with a mature hen’s ability to continue laying eggs.

Will Australorp Chicken Lay White Or Brown Eggs?

While white eggs are the most common color of eggs in grocery stores, they are not the only color that eggs come in. Some chickens will even lay green, blue, or pink eggs. But what color eggs do the Australorp chicken breed lay?

The Australorp chicken breed produces light brown eggs that are medium in size. They are typically smaller than the large eggs you normally purchase in the grocery store. Despite this smaller size, the Australorp hens can lay a whopping 300 or more eggs a year!

Despite what you may believe, the shell color doesn’t affect the taste or nutritional value of the egg. When compared to one another, brown eggs and white eggs share an almost identical nutritional value as taste. With that said, however, there are various things that can affect the taste of eggs, including how fresh they are. And since brown eggs are typically purchased from local farmers, you may be tasting a fresher egg than what you purchase at the grocery store.

Do You Need A Same Breed Rooster To Get Australorp Chicken To Lay Eggs?

Unless you have raised chickens in the past, you may not know what type of rooster is needed to get your Australorp chickens to start laying eggs.

Australorp hens will lay eggs with or without a rooster. While a rooster does provide many benefits, they are not necessary in order for hens of any chicken breed to lay eggs. If, however, you want the eggs fertilized, you will need a rooster, though it can be any breed.

Roosters will mate and fertilize the eggs of any breed of hen, so having the same breed isn’t a requirement. Keep in mind, though, that you will need an Australorp hen and rooster if you want the chicks to be Australorps. If not, then the chicks will be a mixed breed.

What Is The Lifespan Of An Australorp Chicken?

Australorp Chicken

Not every breed has the same lifespan. Some chicken breeds live for only a few years, while other breeds can live for over 10 years.

Australorp chickens have a lifespan of about 8 or more years. Now, this is simply an average and some chickens will live less than this, while others could live longer. The best way to ensure your birds live for as long as possible is to give them everything they need to be healthy and happy.

If you want to prolong the life of your flock, you should also ensure your birds are protected from predators both in the air and on the ground. Predators are a common culprit for early chicken death, and can quickly take out your entire flock if you’re not careful. The good news is that you can take steps to protect your chickens from predators. One way is to bury metal chicken wire several feet around the entire coop and run. This will stop digging predators from gaining access to your birds.

Are Australorp Chicken Friendly?

The temperament of the Australorp breed is an aspect that shouldn’t be overlooked. After all, you don’t want to raise chickens if they are aggressive and hard to work with. This becomes even more important if you plan on having your coop close to your home.

Australorps are considered a docile chicken breed and have a friendly and gentle nature. They can even become attached to humans, and work well in both urban and rural backyards. This breed is a good option if you have children because they are so laid back and tame.

How Many Eggs Can An Australorp Chicken Lay A Day?

The amount of eggs a breed of chicken can lay is one of the most important aspects when considering which chickens to raise. This is especially true if you are raising chickens for their eggs.

Australorp hens are amazing layers, and can lay 4 to 5 eggs per week. This breed even has the potential to lay up to 300 eggs a year! These eggs are light brown in color and are medium in size. Because they lay so many eggs, you can expect to have a steady supply of fresh eggs at your fingertips.

When Will An Australorp Chicken Stop Laying Eggs?

Even though Australorp hens are impressive layers, they can stop laying eggs. This typically occurs as the hen gets older.

Australorp hens can typically continue to lay eggs for 5 to 7 years. However, the amount of eggs they lay will usually begin to drop after a few years. With that said, it isn’t uncommon for hens to keep laying a few eggs a week even after they have reached 8 or more years old.

At What Age Is An Australorp Chicken The Most Delicious?

Some people raise chickens for their eggs, while some raise chickens for their meat, and even others use them for dual purposes.

Most chickens, including the Australorp, have the most tender and delicious meat when they are harvested before they reach 2 years old. You can butcher the chickens after this time, but the meat may not be as tasty. Cooking the meat slowly, such as in stews and soaps, helps to combat this issue.

Best Housing Setup For An Australorp Chicken

The housing setup you have for your flock can make or break how happy and healthy your birds are. The truth is, a poor housing setup can be determintal to the birds.

Australorps are considered a large chicken breed and need at least 4 square feet of coop space per bird. Each bird will also need at least 10 square feet of run space as well. If you plan on allowing the chickens to free range, you can skip the run or offer them a smaller run.

Additionally, each Australorp will need about 8 inches of roosting bar inside the coop and at least one 12×12 nesting box for every 4 hens. Not providing nesting boxes can increase the stress levels of your hens and leave them to lay their eggs in hard to find areas.

Typical Health Problems Of An Australorp Chicken

Each breed of chicken can have its own set of health problems that are more likely to affect them than other breeds. And the Australorp is no different. The good news is that this is a hardy chicken breed that doesn’t deal with too many issues.

Australorps don’t have many health problems, and are actually less likely to develop deformities that can affect other breeds, such as bent toes and twisted beaks. They are, however, a bit more prone to heatstroke, so keep that in mind when raising this breed.

Australorps can also experience other common chicken problems, such as parasites. Thankfully, this isn’t an issue that affects just the Australorp breed and it is a problem that can be prevented. The best way to prevent parasites is to keep their coop as clean as possible, provide your flock with dust baths, use wood ash or diatomaceous earth to treat their coop, and keep other birds away from your flock.

Typical Problems Raising Australorp Chicken

Even though the Australorp chicken breed doesn’t have many problems, it can still experience an issue every now and again. Let’s take a look at what these problems are and how you can prevent them.

Australorps have stunning black feathers, which makes them more susceptible to heat stroke. Because of this, the Australorp will need access to shade no matter the time of day or the time of year. Another potential problem with Australorps is that the roosters can develop frostbite on their combs.

Ensuring your flock has a shaded area available to them throughout the entire year, but especially during the hotter months is a requirement for this breed. Furthermore, make sure your birds have access to fresh cool water to help keep them cool and safe during periods of hot weather.

What Type Of Food Is Best For Australorp Chicken?

The type of food you feed your flock will have a direct impact on their overall health and wellness. That is why it is important to know what type of food is best for Australorp chickens.

Australorp chickens should be feed mash or crumbles when they are in their chick stage, and then transition to 16 percent layer feed once they reach 16 weeks old. You should also supplement their diet with fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and grains.

If you allow the Australorps to free range, they will naturally supplement their own diet by scratching the ground and consuming the seeds, insects, and grubs they find. This will also give your flock some entertainment and enrichment.

Along with food, you will also need to provide your flock with fresh water daily. This is not something that should be skipped. Even if the weather is less than ideal, you will need to trek out to your chicken coop and give your birds fresh, clean water and fresh feed.
