Hi, I’m Rachel(R. Jamieson), the author and creator of Chicken Pals (now Pentagon Pets). I’ve been keeping chickens for around ten years now and I love everything about them including their quirkiness and the way they just love life.

I live with my husband, 3 kids a dog and a growing population of chickens. We are lucky enough to be able to graze our chickens on common land where we live and they love it.

Over the years we’ve spent time learning lots about chickens and how to keep them, it’s been trial and error along the way – errors being letting them trash the garden. But we’ve learned to develop good routines which keep our chickens happy and healthy.

Chickens, in my opinion, are one of the most understated pets, the common misconception is they’re just laying machines which don’t think or feel much when in actual fact they have the most amazing personalities and most of them love being around people.

We also take care of ex-battery hens within our small flock which has been a real eye-opener as to just how much chickens get a bad deal when it comes to farming.

Seeing these chickens step out into the open for the first time and foraging for natural food has been one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever done as a family. It’s great to know these few chickens can spend their retirement being happy and relaxed in a natural environment.
